Writing Work

$50.00

A 2-day writing class about writing class, jobs, and (hard) work.

Join Banana Pitch Founding Editor Michelle Kicherer for a generative writing workshop centered around writing the work place. It can be any kinda place where the man’s got you down. Maybe it’s white collar and your boss is breathing down your neck; maybe it’s blue collar and your boss is breathing down your neck; maybe it’s no collar and you’ve got bigger fish to catch than a boss. Maybe it’s bigger than that.

It’s always bigger than that.

For fiction or nonfiction writing, geared toward including humor, cynicism and satire (but we’re not pushing it). We’ll zoom in on a micro moment to magnify the macro.

Class Goals:

This 2-day workshop will focus on generating a draft of a 2 to 3 page story.

  • Day 1 is focused on highlighting literary examples and generating material with a focus on strong openings

  • We’ll aim to include tension, some element of “what will happen” and for those interested: ways to infuse satire and criticism

  • Students will be encouraged to work on their stories that evening after class (not mandatory)

  • Day 2 will include sharing student’s sticking points and finding solutions.

  • We’ll look at more examples and send students home with ways to move forward with their stories.

NOTE:

  • Class will conclude Friday night at 5 pm, after which we can stick around and order beverages of any nature (they’ve got coffee, NA sparkling things, as well as beer, cider, etc) so we can talk about writing, jobbing, and etcetera. Fun times!

  • Students are highly encouraged to support this worker-owned establishment by purchasing cafe beverages before class.
